Who are the main users of Social media?

March 6, 2013 in Uncategorized

Teenagers, alduts, older people, students, young professionals, or business people. Which group do you think is the main users of social media network?

In my opinion, young professionals are the major users in Facebook, Tweeter, Linkedin, and other social media websites. Social media is useful tool for the young professional to communicate with their friends, express their opinions and brand theirselves out.

  1. I think it definitely depends on which social media site you are using. Obviously, LinkedIn is targeted towards young professionals and business people. Twitter and Facebook have so many different facets that can cater to different people. Professionals and companies can use Facebook and Twitter just as much as Teenagers and adults. I think Instagram is another one that probably has less professional users. It all depends on the site and your own objectives.

    • I agree with Jennie’s observation. However, overall, I would say that there are a majority of the younger population who are on social media. And this is only because the younger crowd are more aware and in tune and able to adapt easily to the change and shift in technology. Also, Social medias are subject towards trends. Myspace used to be the big thing, and now it is facebook. And many facebook patrons are shifting towards instagram. Younger people definitely follow trends better than the older generation.

    • Definitely agree with this. However, I think I mainly associate Twitter with a younger audience though.

  2. Chunyong and Jennie both make good points. I agree young professionals are probably the largest user base, but it certainty does depend on what social media platform you are referring to, as Jennie stated. I think social media is being more and more leveraged for businesses, therefore business users are probably the fastest growing user group that you mentioned.

  3. I agree with both of you young professionals definitely are the main users of social media. The reason is because social media provides many opportunities for them and allows them to build their network. I think right under young professionals are teenagers, and I think they are the fastest growing group of users and will one day past the number of young professionals that use social media.

  4. Like you said young professionals are the main users on the sites. I think all three sites are a combination of work and play. Many older adults aren’t looking for businesses, but trying to reconnect with old friends on Facebook. While some of the younger generations will use social media to communicate with friends as if it were a cell phone. LinkedIn is the most business focused, Twitter is balance of both, and Facebook seems to be more about the recreational use through, games and interacting with friends.

  5. I think young professionals and teenage kids are mostly the main users of social media. The older generation is still new to all the technology that happening now, I think their numbers are going for the amount of users they represent, but overall I’m sticking with the younger demographic

  6. I agree with all of you, the young demographic is a huge market for Social Medias to grow, and this is one of the reasons that they are targeting into this group. However, some people are using social media sites to build networks and to know more people around the world. Then, I come into a conclusion that we should not use age to group users, we should use needs to group them.

  7. I would also think that either teens or yound professionals are the leading users of social media. Those generations are what has grown the social media lifestyle. However, I think I heard that senior citizens are the highest growing demographic using social media. Perhaps to remain in contact with their family and friends, especially grandkids.

  8. I agree that college students / young professionals are definitely the main users of social media.Even though many adults are beginning to use social media, it definitely targets the younger demographic.

  9. I think college students are definitely the most frequent users of social media. A lot of them use social media for different things, whether it’s for staying in touch with friends, creating events, or uploading pictures. I think the most popular websites for college students are Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. I myself have all three of those accounts. I also think businesses use social media a lot, but for different reasons. A lot of businesses have their own Facebook pages, where they might post information about their company in the hopes that it will help promote their image. Businesses need to be really careful with social media though because just one post, comment, or photo has the potential to either make or break the company.

  10. I think the user base shifts depending on the social media platform. Facebook has become well versed for a lot of different age groups. It is very popular with our parents and our generations nowadays, Twitter I think is still aimed at businesses and the younger generation. LinkedIn is definitely for professionals and businesses. And Pintrest has been widely reported as being geared towards mostly females. Social media is so great because everyone has their niche. Social media as a whole is not simply aimed at one demographic. There is a platform for everyone.

    • I completely agree with Kathryn. Different platforms attract different users. Facebook users are anybody and everybody while Pinterest attracts many more women than it does men. For this reason, social media is growing and becoming ever so important due to the fact that it is applicable to a wide variety of users.

  11. I agree with the previous comments that it really does depend on the social media site. With that being said, I still believe that younger generation is the main users of social media. Older professionals and businesses are starting to adapt and learn the importance of social media now so I believe we start to see a trend of companies using social media more and more.

  12. I would say that young professionals and students are the main users of social media, but the users on others demographic are also growing fast.

  13. The major users of social media are young people. However, as social media became more important to our lives, more and more organizations and firms use it as a way to interact with their customers, advertise their products and also engage with their customers.

  14. I would agree with the majority on this topic that young professionals are the main proponents of social media. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn to name a few of the popular sites are generally used by most of our peers. These sites are beginning to attract older generations and businesses as social media has become more prevalent. I think this trend will continue for years to come.

  15. I would like to say that the majority group of people who use social media most are young people .Young people are more likely to learn new thing and good at it. meanwhile, young people are more creative than older people. Social media usually stimulate people to create more than they expect. and also, because the young people are the generation of social media, there are no different between business professional or students, I mean as long as you have passion for social media, you will insist to use social media.

  16. As technology emerges, social media becomes popular for everyone now. My mom, my aunts, my uncles, who did not how to use internet before, now all have facebooks. However, if we are talking about main users of social media, i would say they are businesses, , profesional and students.

  17. I agree with the earlier posts that it depends on the social media platform. Mostly people between the ages of 25 and 35 are the highest users of social media for various needs such as networking, business promotions. socializing, and blogging. However there is an increasing trend amongst the age group of 50-65 who are now using social media extensively. So again to reiterate what has been mention on previous posts as well, it depends a lot on the platform being used.

  18. Overall, I think the main users of social media are between the ages of 16-24. Mostly everyone in college and high school are on Facebook. Even though Facebook was originally geared towards college students, it is very popular among high school students. Occasionally adults/parents use Facebook as social media, but a much lower percentage compared to people in high school and college. Twitter is also popular in this age range (16-24), but I think the main users of twitter range across a wide spectrum of users. Social media is growing in popularity in all age groups, but I think the most dominant area remains in the high school/college age group.

  19. I agree with what most people have already said. Different types of social media target different audience. Ok, maybe with the exception with Facebook since people of all groups use it. However, it did start out as for only Harvard students, but eventually it evolved and became more universal. As of now, each social media platform has its own type of audience/base users.

  20. I agree with the majority of my classmates. I think it definitely depends on which social media site you are using. As Kathryn mentioned the user base shifts depending on the social media platform. Pinterest users for example, are mainly women who are interested in Art, Design, Fashion, Food, Hair and Beauty, Health and Fitness, Interior Design, Photography, Travel and Weddings. LinkedIn on the other hand, is targeted towards young professionals and business people.

  21. I completely agree, I do think that young professionals are the main users of Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, although I think LinkedIn is used more by business professionals. It is funny though the range of people that do now use Facebook, my 80 year old gran uses it to communicate with our family.

  22. So I just figured out that I’m way behind when it comes to social media and technology.

I just started using Twitter and today I just heard about foursquare.

What are some of your favorite social media websites or trends online?

Please list all your favorites so I can check them out.

I need to catch up! Thanks!
