Great Pizza (and general foodie) Resources – FooBooz

May 1, 2013 in Uncategorized

Hello to all my loyal blog followers.  As we wrap up the semester, I wanted to leave you with some excellent resources.

Definitely, my first pick is to follow @foobooz on Twitter for complete up to the minute details on all things foodie in Philly. Check out their website here FooBooz for comprehensive recommendations on where to eat, drink and be merry in the City of Brotherly Love.

As for pizza, there is a big happening this week.  Lorenzo’s on South Reopens.  Check it out here.  For anyone who has ever stumbled out of a late night venue on South Street, this is THE place to pick up a slice of pizza with your rowdy, raucous friends on your way home.  The experience makes it.

Also, Craig LaBan recently sampled Genarro’s South Philly and his review leaves you drooling for tomato pie.    A place not to be missed, for sure.

So if you have any great resources, favorite pizza joints, or just good foodie advice, be sure to share it.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my pizza blogging journey and wish all of you health, happiness and many delicious slices of pizza in your life.

PITRUCO – Mobile Wood-Fired Pizza

April 30, 2013 in Uncategorized

If you search long enough, and when you least expect it, you find what you’re looking for.

It all happened yesterday on a rainy, wet spring day in Philly. I had worked at home in the morning and was headed into the city for some afternoon meetings.  While on the train, I was checking my Twitter feed and FooBooz was Tweeting that the Pitruco pizza truck was in Love Park and was worth waiting for in the rain. Hmmm, this was only a few blocks out of my way, so what the heck?

Nice day for pizza in Love Park.

What I found was a nice crowd of folks ordering and waiting for their custom made-to-order pizzas.  Lucky for me, they still had some pizzas left because right after my order, they ran out.  I chatted with the pizza crew as I waited and found out that they come to Temple on Tuesdays (12th -13th on Norris) and they also hit Drexel, the Navy Yard and Bellavista, plus can be hired for private parties.  You can check their schedule on their website.  The folks are very friendly and the wood-fired oven was roaring a red glow as pizzas went in and out with amazing speed.

Sausage Pie

I opted to abandon my VB6 (Vegan Before Six) and Meatless Monday’s for the sausage pie, and let me tell you, I was not disappointed.   What awaited me was a piping hot pizza fresh out of the oven, made with top quality ingredients.  This pizza features a bechamel (white sauce), crumbled sweet sausage, caramelized onions, roasted mushrooms and pecorino cheese.  The sauce had a hint of sweetness that blended with the savory/salty of the sausage, the sweet onions, earthy mushrooms and dusted cheese.  The crust was lightly charred but not too burned, thin in the middle, and puffy and soft around the rim.  This pizza was pure heaven!  Plus on Monday’s at Love Park all pizza’s are priced at just $5.  Now, I’ve tried all kinds of artisan pizza in Philly, with price tags as high as $16, and most can’t compare to what Pitrucopizza is serving.

I’m going to rate this pizza because I finally found a wood-fired pizza, from a truck no less, that is worthy of rating and because I think you should try it.  For the sauce, three points, for the crust, three points, for the toppings four points (amazing combo), and for the ambiance/personality, one point, for a total of 11 out of 10 points.  Yes folks, it was just that good.

Have you tried PITRUCOPIZZA yet?  If so, what did you think?  What is your favorite flavor?

Don’t delay.  Give it a try.

Happy pizza eating.

Realities of Pizza Blogging 101

April 26, 2013 in Uncategorized

For all of my dedicated followers out there who may think that blogging about pizza is glamorous and fun, think again.  I hate to break it to you, but blogging about pizza can be hard work.  Take this week for instance.  I have been hitting the pizza and blogging pretty strong to end the semester on a high note and gain a few more quest points without adding inches to my waistline.  However, my plan for the week fell apart when I failed to consider that there was an all US employee webinar scheduled for this Thursday at my office.  I had already indulged in pizza on Monday and Wednesday, with a plan to finish strong with one more city run/pizza sampling scheduled for today, Friday.

Lindsay Klinzman, Pizza Fanatic.

I had totally forgotten that we order around two dozen pizzas on webinar days.  My blogging plan was in serious danger.  I started strong by bringing my home packed salad to the meeting, but  the aromas of fresh hot Zio’s (one of my blog faves) filled the office, and caused my fallen willpower.   Yes, indeed, I did eat the salad, but then had some pizza as well.  Who can pass up employer provided  Zio’s in either pepperoni, plain or veggie (shown above) when trapped in a small conference room with seven other colleagues, listening to a review company financials?  No me, that ‘s for sure.

The best part of the day was that I was able to highlight my pal Lindsay enjoying pizza and have a bit of fun.

As you venture into your professional careers, remember, sometimes what you have to do is not glamorous, but at least most employers are willing to provide good, free pizza for tough days when you have to (a) work through lunch, (b) work late into the night or (c) attend company meetings.

Where should I go next for the pizza blog?  Give me your suggestions.  Only a few posts left.
