The Flying Monkey

This is one of the first dessert places that I ever went to in Reading Terminal Market. I was instantly drawn to this place because it made me think of The Wizard of OZ, which is one of my favorite movies! When I first went there The Flying Monkey it was a small stand but recently they have undergone renovations and have a new set up.

They have everything from coffee, brownies, cakes, cookies, cupcakes, lemon bars…you name it they got it! They are a little pricey but all the items are high quality!

I got a ‘smoreo to share with my friend and it was delicious. Next time I want to try one of their mint chocolate chip whoopie pies!!!

So next time you’re wandering around Reading Terminal looking for a dessert spot you know where to go!

Green Eggs Cafe

This morning I went to breakfast with a friend in Northern Liberties at Green Eggs Café. I had been there once before a few months ago with another friend who gives Food Tours in Northern Liberties and is obsessed with the place. And honestly I don’t blame her, the food is delicious!

The first time I went I got the French toast but this time I opted for their famous red velvet pancakes and they did not disappoint!!! One of the best parts of eating at the restaurant is to look around and see what everyone else ordered because all the food looks so wonderful , it will have you second guessing your order!

Check out the entire menu.

I definitely recommend trying Green Eggs Café; they have three convenient locations across the city (Northern Liberties, Center City and South Philly).

Some things to keep in mind:

  • They are only open for breakfast and lunch
  • Cash only

Fonda La Prima

This past weekend my friends and I hit several dive bars in south Philly. We had a lot of fun wandering around looking for cool bars with great drink specials. After a few bars we got hungry and decided to look for food. We headed over to the Italian market and found this amazing Mexican quick-serve restaurant called Fond La Prima!

Location:

1104 S 9th St (Washington Ave)

Hours:

8am – 5am

YES, you read that correctly they are open 21 hours a day and they deliver! And let me tell you this is one of the best authentic Mexican restaurants I have ever been to and I’m originally from California so I know my Mexican food! I had the steak tacos and they were AMAZING!!! They were severed with a side of cooked cactus and salsa verde. I cannot wait to go back; it is definitely worth the trip to south Philly for this deliciously authentic food!!

The Ritz East

Last week I decided that I wanted to see a movie, and since there are only a limited number of “regular” movie theaters in the city that are easily accessible by public transportation.

I went to the Ritz East located on cobble stones at 2nd and Walnut. It is a small theater with only two screens so I suggest knowing which movie you want to see before making your way down to Old City. There are several Ritz theaters located throughout the city. I really enjoy going to the Ritz because they play independent movies that are in limited release.

I went to see Stoker starring Nicole Kidman, Mia Wasikowska, and Matthew Goode

Plot Summary, from IMDB: After India’s father dies, her Uncle Charlie, who she never knew existed, comes to live with her and her unstable mother. She comes to suspect this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives and becomes increasingly infatuated with him.

I really enjoyed the movie; it was very thought provoking and had me guessing the entire time! I definitely encourage you to check out a Ritz theatre and see a quality independent film, you won’t regret it!

Macy’s Flower Show

I am a huge Macy’s fan and absolutely love the gorgeous store downtown. I was pleasantly surprised when I went into the store last week to shop for new spring clothes that Macy’s was filled with flower displays. The Macy’s Flower Show – The Painted Garden took place from March 25th to April 7th. I was glad that I got to see the beautiful displays since I missed the annual Philadelphia Flower Show last month.

This flower show was also happening in New York, Chicago, Minneapolis, Washington DC and San Francisco. And there were several events throughout the show, such as daily tours of all the displays.

I must say that the store is not exactly big enough for these displays but they are so pretty that I didn’t mind it. If you missed The Macy’s Flower Show you can always catch it next year! And there is always the holiday display during the month of December! Happy shopping!

Federal Donuts

I’m definitely a donut lover and when I heard about this place I knew I just had to try it! Not only do they sell donuts but they also sell fried chicken – I went there early in the morning so I opted to stick with the donuts but will have to come back to try their unique fried chicken!

Fancy $ 2 Each

Double Chocolate

Turkish Coffee

Raspberry Lemonade

Milk Chocolate-Peanut Butter

French Toast

Cherry-Almond

Hot Fresh $1.25 Each

 Vanilla Spice

Strawberry-Lavender

Cinnamon-Brown Sugar

With all of these donut options it was difficult to decide but I chose the Raspberry Lemonade, and the French Toast. They were both INCREDIBLE! The French Toast tasted just like the real thing! And the Raspberry Lemonade was absolutely delicious! If you love donuts I highly recommend check out Federal Donuts, you won’t be disappointed! Just a tip: they normally sell out of the fancy donuts by 11am so get there early!

North Bowl

Last night my friends and I decided to go to Northern Liberties. We have been talking out going bowling for weeks so we went to check out North Bowl. I did my research before I went and I’m glad I did because they only take cash for bowling. Plus it was good to know the prices before we got there. It’s a little pricey for bowling but not too bad, shoe rental is about $5 and it’s about $5 a game per person.

We got there at about 10:30pm and we were told that it would be an hour and a half wait but to check back in 40 minutes to get a pager. My friends and I put our name in and then headed to doors over to The Standard Tap for a beer while we waited. We went back about 40 minutes later and they told us that our lane was ready! We were glad that it didn’t take as long as they quoted us.

If you have never been to North Bowl you should definitely check it out! It is very trendy, they have low lighting, strobe lights, retro arcade games, pool and much more! We had a blast bowling and all the staff there were super helpful. We were on a lane upstairs which was almost like having our own private bowling alley!

In between our first and second game we headed to the bar for drinks and snacks! I got a specialty cocktail called a Kentucky Margarita (which wasn’t too overpriced at $6) and garlic tater tots. When looking up North Bowl ever single Yelp review mentioned how awesome their tater tots are so I knew we had to try them! They have regular tater tots and a few specialty like pizza and buffalo.

We had so much fun bowling and hanging out. We will most definitely be coming back!

John’s Roast Pork

This weekend I went shopping over in south Philly and every time I’m there I pass by John’s Roast Pork. It’s a very small building right next to old train tracks but always seems to draw a large crowd. However, they have really strange hours:

Hours of Operation
MON – FRI
6:45 AM – 3:00 PM
Saturdays
9:00 AM – 4:00 PM

It was established in 1930and is the home of the Original Roast Pork Sandwich and it also claims to have the ‘Ultimate Cheesesteak.’

They have a pretty large menu with a lot of different option. I decided that I wanted to try the pork sandwich since it’s there specialty and let me tell you it’s the best pork sandwich I ever had! Plus since there is a line so if you order a pork or roast beef sandwich they can make them more quickly than the other offerings on the menu. If you are ever in the area you should definitely check this place out!

The Original Turkey – Reading Terminal Market

Looking for a delicious turkey sandwich with turkey so fresh that it feels like thanksgiving? Look no further than The Original Turkey in Reading Terminal Market. This place has to be my favorite lunch spot in the market, it never disappoints!

There are a few options on the menu, you can choose from a turkey platter with traditional sides, wraps, or sandwiches on freshly made bread. I always opt for a turkey sandwich on rye bread. The bread is incredible it is so fresh and really makes the sandwich. They also have a Thanksgiving sandwich that has stuffing and cranberry sauce on it, I have always wanted to try this but haven’t yet!

If you’re hungry and looking for a new place to eat, I highly recommend The Original Turkey and you’ll want to keep coming back for more!
